AN ALASKAN SCULPTOR FINDS HIS LIFE'S WORK IN THE MASK-MAKING TRADITIONS OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST BY DOTTIE INDYKE
THE SON OF YUPIK AND ALEUT PARENTS, Jack Abraham was born in Umkumiut, an isolated Alaskan fishing village on the Bering Sea coast. His born name, Ayap'run, was abandoned in favor of "Abraham," a moniker plucked straight out of the Old Testament and one that was far less difficult for outsiders to pronounce.
Alcohol overtook his father early on, and Abraham and his siblings were left to survive as best they could. Their childhood home in Bethel, AK, doubled as a bar and flophouse...
