J. Newton Esdaile, 96, a Massachusetts civil trial lawyer who tried a case on which the 1982 movie "The Verdict" was based, died July 26 in Boston after a stroke. He tried more than 1,000 cases, including the one that inspired the movie. Friends said, however, that the hard-working, well- prepared Mr. Esdaile bore no resemblance to the boozy Boston lawyer portrayed by Paul Newman. In the 1967 medical malpractice case, Mr. Esdaile represented a woman who suffered irreversible brain damage while giving birth in 1964.
