This volume is a worthy substitute for the as-yet-to-be written major biography of Bernal (1901-1971), physicist and crystallographer, sometime Communist Party member and life-time socialist, who both envisioned and helped fashion a society transformed by science. The story of Bernal's scientific and political life, and of the influence of the one on the other, should be of great interest and value to historians of science and of politics.
