On a visit to Israel earlier this year, I had the occasion to visit both Education Minister Yossi Sarid and then, the next day, the former Sephardic chief rabbi, Ovadia Yosef. The two have been in a cross-town cultural clash. Mr. Sarid is doing his best to torpedo the progress of religious education in general and Shas schools in particular. Rav Ovadia has been reacting to the incessant left-wing siege with frustration.
