Aboard S.S. Independence -- Under ink black skies, the glowing scarlet lava flowing down Mount Kilauea to the ocean glistened and sparkled. Lava splashed into the cool water creating clouds of steam.

As the ship drew closer, binoculars were no longer needed and the molten lava slurped, plopped and disappeared beneath the ocean. Streams of lava shot out from hardened black cracks like fire hoses spraying bright orange soda pop.
