The "Dracula" author's agents refused to sell film rights to legendary director F.W. Murnau ("Sunrise," "Tabu"), so he created an alternative vampire legend for his uncanny 1921 feature, "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Terror." The obscure Schreck gave an uncanny performance as Count Orlock, a nightmare creature poised between bloodlust and decay, and returned to obscurity.
