An Indian domestic airliner slammed into a neighborhood of brick houses today as it apparently was attempting to land in the eastern city of Patna, killing at least 57 people, authorities said. Witnesses told Indian and Western news agencies that the plane roared overhead about 7:30 a.m., clipped a grove of mango trees, sheared into the roofs of some houses and burst into flames. Some witnesses said the plane was burning as it dove into a housing complex for civil servants less than a mile short of the Patna airport runway. Others said it caught fire after it crashed.
