The Dominican-born author Julia Alvarez's first novel, How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents (see WLT 66:3, p. 516), was named a Notable Book of 1991 by the New York Times Book Review. Her second novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, reaffirms her considerable gifts as a writer. Political yet tender, it portrays the injustices of tyranny as seen through the eyes of four Dominican women, three of whom were murdered by a Trujillo death squad in 1960.
