An extract from "Devotion," a novel-in-progress. Andrew Moore closes his eyes, grips the balustrade and lifts his face to the sky. He draws several slow, deep breaths. Minutes pass. Daytime ebbs. He waits. His body tenses. He loosens his tie. It comes, the prelude: faint skin chill, sweet sea odours. He opens his eyes. A massive sun lolls on the horizon then falls from sight. Andrew turns, enters French doors and heads for his leather briefcase. He slides several folders from it, tosses them onto the kitchen bench, goes to the fridge, takes out a lager, unscrews the top, drinks in long draug...
