An extract from "Devotion," a novel-in-progress. Andrew Moore closes his eyes, grips the balustrade and lifts his face to the sky. He draws several slow, deep breaths. Minutes pass. Daytime ebbs. He waits. His body tenses. He loosens his tie. It comes, the prelude: faint skin chill, sweet sea odours. He opens his eyes. A massive sun lolls on the horizon then falls from sight.
