In the 19th century, mourning was rooted in tradition

Emily Mueller will be portraying Emily Slauson, a woman in mourning for her husband's parents, circa 1865. Deaths in the 19th century were treated with very prescribed rituals and traditions, according to Mueller.
"Her husband's parents died within a couple of years of each other, so she had only a year out of mourning clothes between the deaths," Mueller said.
