At the entrance to a dead-end alley on an unfashionable block in downtown San Francisco is one of America's strangest and most beguiling literary landmarks. It's a dignified bronze plaque tucked beneath a street sign, and this is its entire text: "On approximately this spot Miles Archer, partner of Sam Spade, was done in by Brigid O'Shaughnessy." If a casual passer-by comes this way-well, most likely he would be lost, searching for Chinatown (which is down one hill) or Union Square (down another) or Green Door Massage (just around the corner), and wouldn't be bothering with historical markers....
