Ibogaine, a psychedelic drug used by traditional Africans for spiritual insight, has been promoted as an "instant cure" for opiate addiction since the early 1960s. The reality is less spectacular, according to the clinical experience of Patrick K. Kroupa and Hattie Wells. Four of the 45 people whom they treated for drug dependency in 2000-2004 "had extremely profound experiences, which facilitated complete cessation of their drug dependency after a single dose." The remaining 41 needed more than one ibogaine treatment and/or other follow-up care to reach their goals.
