Iain Banks was born in Fife in 1954. An only child, his father was an admiralty officer and his mother a professional ice skater. During vacations, he took odd jobs including working as a road worker and a pier porter on Clydeside docks. He has published 12 novels under the name Iain Banks and nine science-fiction novels under the name Iain M Banks. His latest book, The Steep Approach to Garbadale is published by Little, Brown on 1 March. He lives in Fife, in a house overlooking the Forth Bridge.
