ANNIE Bates had been a regular breakfast-time fixture at the Marks & Spencer cafe for two years.
The 96- year- old spinster walked three miles to the store six days a week, sitting at the same table by the window and ordering a scone or a salmon sandwich.
It was a habit that was to save her life.
When Miss Bates failed to turn up one morning, staff at the Revive cafe in Stockport were concerned-Two days later, when she still had not appeared, they knew something was definitely wrong.
