When West Side Story opened on Broadway in 1957, the role of Mafia was played by Carol Lawrence. The film version shortly followed and, again, the Puerto Rican heroine was played by a non-Latina, Natalie Wood.
Perhaps the most lasting image of a true Hispanic actress on the Great White Way is Carmen Miranda with a pile of fruit on her head from the 1939 production, Streets of Paris.
