'Can I call you back?' I said. I was in the middle of a meeting.

'I don't think so,' came the low voice with a Spanish accent. 'We have a baby girl for adoption.

Her family have choose you. Now you must call us before 24 hours.' 'Are you sure?' 'Yes, we are sure- Es preciosa.' (She's precious.) Es preciosa. It took my breath away.

My husband Adrian and I had been trying to adopt for more than two years. We had two sons - Tom, then aged 14, and 11-year-old Hugh - but had lost our five-year-old daught...
