Holiday, jazz shine on reissue of TV gig

CBS was worried that its squeaky-clean corporate image might be sullied if it permitted jazz diva Billie Holiday -- who served time in jail for drug possession -- to appear on "The Sound of Jazz," an astonishing special that on Dec. 8, 1957, turned out to be jazz's finest hour on television.

"A week or so before, word of (Holiday's) difficulties with drugs and the law had reached the upper levels of CBS, and it was suggested that she be replaced by someone `wholesome,' such as Ella Fitzgera...
