Wilfred E. Hoffmann, or "Toad" to his four brothers, a graduate of Cornell University and Fordham Law School, founder of the law firm Hoffmann, Hubert, and Hoffmann, and author of CPLR Practice, died peacefully on his 99th birthday at his beloved summer house, Swift Water Point, on Wellesley Island. He specialized in criminal law and was as well known for winning acquittals as he was for representing the Onondaga Nation, who consequently adopted him, naming him Chief Shanananda, which translated is Hiawatha II, meaning "uplifting Spirit."
