It is well known that ancient coins, and especially those of the Roman Imperial period, were used as a vehicle of political propaganda and ruler ideology. Herod's coinage is no exception.1 The largest bronze coin is perhaps the most enigmatic.
Like his other coins, it refrains from depicting human images, presumably out of deference to the religious sensibilities of Herod's Jewish subjects, but displays attributes of pagan deities.
