Herod the Great ruled Judaea as a Roman client King from 37 to 4 BCE. Herod was known for his remarkable construction projects, for his fierce loyalty to his Roman masters, the cruelty of his reign, and for his ability to appease his largely Jewish subjects. The inherent tension in pleasing both pagan Rome and his monotheistic Jewish subjects provides a background for understanding the religiously ambiguous or balanced images found on his coins.
