A LATTER-DAY hermit, who has spent more than 20 years living rough in the Scottish countryside, escaped a prison sentence yesterday for a series of petty thefts after pledging to forsake his nomadic lifestyle.

Robert Sinclair, 51, became notorious by evading police investigating a series of break-ins in rural areas across central Scotland in which no money was taken, but food, clothing and essential items went missing.

The search included the use of patrols on horseback and helicopters.
