WILMINGTON, Del. - Hercules Inc. announced Friday it had agreed to sell its 38.5 percent interest in the joint venture Himont Inc. to its partner, Montedison SpA of Milan, Italy, for $1.4 billion. Hercules said it also planned to buy back up to 30 percent of its common shares outstanding over the next two years. Hercules stock rose 25 cents to close at $68.25 on the New York Stock Exchange. The company's shares have traded as high as $73 during the past two weeks. Himont shares fell 50 cents to $49.12 1/2. Himont is the world's largest producer of polypropylene, according to Montedison.
