When I tried to dip my toe into the swamp of heavy metal, I pulled back a bloody stump.
In 1991, I was dragged by some friends to a Huber Heights heavy- metal show in a warehouse so nasty the bathrooms didn't have toilet paper. As the band raged onstage, I checked out the mosh pit from the seemingly safe edge, thinking I might get shoved, but probably not hurt.
I forgot I was wearing Birkenstock sandals. Big mistake.
