Somsanith Khamvongsa has a history of mediating between cultures. Twenty-five years ago in his native Laos, Khamvongsa often would be asked by police officers to serve as a translator for French- or English-speaking visitors who had been robbed in the red-light district. More recently, he has been explaining the United States to new immigrants who come to his office at the Indochinese Community Center at Baileys Crossroads.
