Helicopter Combat Support Squadron (HC) 4 was deactivated on 30 September 2007 after 24 years of service. Cdr. Robert Buckingham was HC-4's last CO. A ceremony held in the squadron's honor on 28 September at NAS Norfolk, Va., was attended by many former and current officers and sailors, including the Black Stallions' first Executive Officer, Capt. James Scurria, USN (Ret.).

HC-4 was established on 6 May 1983 at NAS Sigonella, Sicily, with Cdr. Ronald McDaniel as the first CO. He had two sailors with him and no spaces to house the coming squadron. The bulk of the squadron remained in Norfolk, ...
