When you think of large musical forces, the names that come first to mind are Beethoven, Wagner and Mahler. Yet a century before these great composers, Bach wrote an amazing oratorio that employed two choruses, two orchestras, many soloists and a dizzying score and libretto.
The Handel and Haydn Society explored his "St. Matthew Passion" last night at Symphony Hall, and only one thing can be said: This work is not performed enough.
