Despite the popular and critical acclaim which he received for his first Shakespeare film, Henry V (1945), Laurence Olivier admitted to a great deal of trepidation upon deciding, three years later, to make a film version of Hamlet. It is, of course, the best known, most often performed, and most written about play in the world, one which even the average viewer experiences as a series of famous quotations. In addition to its familiarity, the largely philosophical issues of the play and the highly ambiguous nature of its hero pose a daunting challenge to any filmmaker.
