H. Burton Bates Jr., 85, a retired certified public accountant, died May 16 at the Virginian retirement home in Fairfax. Mr. Bates was born in Washington and graduated from Washington- Lee High School in 1939 as student body president. He served in the Navy during World War II and graduated from George Washington University. He became a CPA and was active in the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, for which he served on committees from 1955 to 1989, and in the Northern Virginia chapter, for which he served in various capacities including president in 1963.
