We pride ourselves on the tastes that we have acquired with difficulty: oysters, the fiction of Gertrude Stein, the Rosary Sonatas of Heinrich Biber. Things that are adored by everyone, effortlessly and immediately--such as chocolate sundaes and Carmen--we tend to dismiss from serious consideration. This new handbook is welcome for the author's intentness, her learning, and her obvious relish for the opera. Friedrich Nietzsche was wrong in believing that Carmen was nobler and better made than the operas of Wagner, but it does deserve equally respectful treatment.
