Maureen Dowd is one of my favorite journalists. Most of the time, she arrives at truths by firing up the facts with wit, satire and irony. These truths penetrate our hearts and gladden our souls. Her column on the Greatest Generation speaks to me personally ("Greatest Generation needs to return to quiet ways," April 25). Next week, I reach my 79th birthday.

I want to tell Dowd why those in my generation are "gushing and celebrating themselves." As a World War II veteran, I know we are leaving this Earth a thousand a day. ...
