Advertisers, competitors and magazine analysts applauded Gruner+Jahr USA Publishing's acquisition of The New York Times Co.'s women's titles, announced June 17. The buy - reportedly around $350 million - places the Bertelsmann AG subsidiary, publisher of Parents, YM and other new-parents titles, in the top ranks of U.S. publishing, and gives G+J added clout and efficiencies in advertising, printing and backroom operations. The deal includes The New York Time Co.'s ownership in Time Distribution Services and a telemarketing unit, but not its custom-publishing operation.
