THE CALL CAME AT 8:15 on a Sunday morning. As soon as I heard my father's voice, I knew what he would tell me: My grandmother had passed away.

My brother, sister and I called her Grandma, but she was G.G. to my daughters and their cousin. It was a name my grandmother selected for herself after her first great-grandchild was born. She decided that "Great-Grandma" was too much of a mouthful for a child to say, so she abbreviated it.
