At the time, Napoleon fancied himself Emperor of the French, King of Italy, Protector of the Confederation of the Rhine and Mediator of the Swiss Confederation. Then he married the archduchess of the Habsburg empire. Meanwhile, his brothers ruled Spain, Holland and Westphalia, and a brother-in-law was in charge of Naples. Not content until he controlled the entire continent, Napoleon eventually overextended himself in the disastrous Russian campaign. The Grand Empire soon imploded. And it's been downhill ever sin...
