IT was billed as one of the most bizarre contests in racing history.

But four legs proved faster than two wings when a greyhound was pitted against a racing pigeon yesterday.

With an estimated top speed of 70mph and an unbeaten record - at least in the racing bird world - Speckled Jim the pigeon certainly had statistics on his side.

The five-year-old bird is normally a sprinter over 80 metres and has seen off all comers in his 27-race career.
