For Julie Andrews, the magic really began when she realized she could make time stand still

Julie Andrews doesn't sing in the shower or when she's vacuuming the rug. When her children were small, she made up silly songs and sang to them, but it never came naturally.

"I had to make a conscious effort to do it," she said during a recent telephone interview.

Unlike Maria Von Trapp, perhaps the most famous character she portrayed, Andrews never had the urge to just burst into song.
