Dublin is having a Brian Friel festival with 17 of his plays being shown in the city's theaters. There is also an exhibition of his letters, scripts, photographs; pre-show talks; adaptations; and new productions as the playwright celebrates his 70th birthday. Among the plays being performed are 'Dancing at Lughnasa' at the Abbey Theater and the 'Aristocrats' at the Gate Theater. These events are not the result of a Friel mania sweeping Dublin or Ireland but simply an overwhelming desire by theater managers, directors and producers to celebrate his contributions to Irish literature.
