The $1.08 billion merger of Scrivner Inc. into Fleming Companies Inc., completed Tuesday, creates the opportunity for massive economies of scale that could have the ultimate effect of driving down food costs for the consumer. Tom Olson, publisher of the Atlanta trade journal Food People, said the merger will give the enlarged Fleming more purchasing power, which in turn will translate to better prices for both its company-owned and independent stores.
