Bridgestone/Firestone announced yesterday it is recalling 297,000 Steeltex Radial A/T tires on recent models of Ford Excursions, after the government said it would investigate whether the tires played a role in crashes that killed five people and injured 20. The possible defects were flagged by a new government system created last year for early detection of flaws in automotive products. The system was put in place in response to an earlier massive Firestone recall of tires that killed and injured hundreds in rollover crashes.
