African American soldiers played an important role in Union regiments during the US Civil War and in expanding US land boundaries. Called Buffalo Soldiers, they fought under Generals Grant, Sheridan and Sherman, and helped bring about a short-lived peace treaty with the Indians of the Great Plains. They also assisted frontier judges and sheriffs in implementing law.
