The FDA intends to conduct a scientific assessment of the health significance of very low levels of furans in certain foods. During its review of a petition to allow irradiation treatment of certain foods, FDA discovered the substance furan was present in a wider range of foods than previously suspected. Low levels of furan (i.e., up to 100 parts per billion) were found in a number of foods that undergo normal heat treatment, such as canned and jarred foods.
