Farewells: "Flash Gordon" Mineo, one of the more prolific Funny Car match racers from the late 1960s to 1980, was killed in a boating accident Sept. 2 that also claimed the lives of his wife Ann and three other people. The Mineos were in one boat taking part in a poker-run race on Oklahoma's Lake Texoma when their boat collided with another driven by a Tennessee couple. Two other people in their boat and a person in the second boat were killed in the accident. During his racing career, Mineo worked his way up from Comp to Funny Car, where he earned his nickname.
