Chief Leabua Jonathan, 73, Lesotho's prime minister for 20 years before his ouster in a military coup in January 1986, died of cancer April 5 at a hospital in Pretoria. Chief Jonathan was Lesotho's only leader from 1966, when the predominantly black country gained independence from Britain, until the coup. In the early years of his leadership, he maintained cordial relations with white-ruled South Africa, which surrounds his tiny, mountainous country and dominates its economy.
