THORNDIKE - Maine consumers are ready: The cream is chilled, and the shortbread is baked. Strawberry season is nearly upon us.
But Maine growers said this weekend that if the sun doesn't come out soon - and stay out - those little red gems may not get the opportunity to ripen properly.
After all, farmers say, it's the sun that provides the sweetness.
"They are not ripening, but they are looking good," Herb Schartner of Schartner Farms in Thorndike said of his berry crop this weekend. "The water will plump them up, but 80 degrees would be nice to finish them off."
