In relatively rapid order Christopher Sykes brought out a hefty, authorized biography; Waugh's diaries, letters and essays were collected in three massive volumes; his major novels were reissued in an attractive, uniform edition; and, for a few weeks at least, the television miniseries of Brideshead Revisited made English Catholics of us all. Usually, of course, a writer's death leads to a downswing in critical opinion...
