The desire for seamless cross-border trading in European equities is shared by everyone but the complicated politics of stock exchanges are making this difficult to achieve. Users of European exchanges pay $1.2bn a year for clearing and settlement, while users of US exchanges pay some $600m and the volumes are much greater.
