The European Monetary Union (EMU), being for the people and by the people of Europe, must be decided upon by the majority and not merely the elite few. Although some predict that the EMU may not takeoff, the economic union is reasonably achievable by 1999. As the EMU is a European event that will largely dictate European business once it is in place, the UK cannot afford to remain undecided and be sidelined by the possible rush of events. The European Parliament believes that the UK should be a part of the EMU as it also hopes for haste in the implementation of the single currency.
