When applied to a professional qualification, the appellation Chartered' is well understood, at least in the UK. This is not surprising since Chartered' has been in common use in this country for a considerable time. As long ago as 1930, the (then) Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain and Ireland first mooted the idea of Chartered Chemist' but nearly half a century was to elapse before, in 1975, the Institute, by way of a Supplemental Charter, gained the right to confer the title on its fellows and members.
