FRIDAY Her wry lyrics and serrated drawl have made Lucinda Williams (right) one of the most recognizable voices on the alt- country scene, if perhaps not quite so well known beyond it. Such is the fate of a 49-year-old critics' darling in a world that glorifies gum-snapping youth and gloss over smarts and hard-won experience. Her latest album, "Essence," may not be the equal of 1998's "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road," but it's a gem, glittering in its own right.
