HARKERS ISLAND, N.C. -- Hurricane Emily hurled 100 m.p.h. winds and giant ocean swells at North Carolina's Outer Banks yesterday as the storm gained strength furiously before assaulting the barrier islands. Many buildings lost their roofs on Hatteras Island where the eye of the hurricane first drew a bead on land late yesterday afternoon. Initially a moderate storm, Emily grew rapidly into a Class 3 hurricane as it approached the coast, with winds offshore measured at 115 m.p.h.
