The serious premise of The Inn at Lake Devine, Elinor Lipman's fourth novel, doesn't inhibit her gentle wit. Lipman, 47, lives in Northampton with her husband and son. Even your thorniest character ever, the antisemitic innkeeper Ingrid, softens a bit in the end. As my grandmother once said, can't you work up a good hate? To me, Ingrid is unredeemed. But, you know, oftentimes when I'm in a conversation at the dinner table, my husband will turn to the guests and say parenthetically, "Ellie likes everyone." So maybe the answer is no. Do you worry about being too nice as an author or as a person?...
